Today’s ‘Wordle’ #873 Answer, Tips for Thursday, November 9 Puzzle

Since 2021, Wordle has managed to keep fans hooked on its daily word puzzles.

One of the more positive legacies of the COVID-19 pandemic, at its peak Wordle had over 2 million players and was purchased by The New York Times for a seven-figure sum in January 2022.

Created by Josh Wardle, the game was a gift for his crossword-loving partner during lockdown. Realizing that other puzzle fans might enjoy Wordle, the New York-based software engineer uploaded the game online in October 2021, and the rest is history.

Although Wordle engrossed fans during lockdown and beyond, its creator didn’t want fans becoming too addicted to the game.

If you’ve ever wondered why you can solve only one Wordle brainteaser a day, it’s because Wardle was concerned fans would tire of the game too quickly—or just spend too much time playing—if given access to an unlimited number of puzzles.

“The idea to impose a limitation came when my partner and I started getting into crosswords during the pandemic,” he previously told Newsweek.

“In particular, The New York Times have this puzzle called ‘Spelling Bee,’ which has this once-a-day model that I thought was really effective.

“I liked the idea that everyone around the world was trying to solve the exact same word at the exact same time. It created a shared communal experience [if] there were multiple puzzles to solve and everyone was at a different stage, then there wouldn’t be that kind of conversation, which I think is the most fulfilling part of Wordle.”
